We conducted an online survey with 2,000 adults who planned on traveling during the summer of 2022.
The research, commissioned by Motel 6, revealed that the average respondent (32%) had waited about four years to reconnect with their extended family. With this in mind, it was no surprise that over half were willing to travel further to be reunited with family and friends than ever before.
– According to those who participated in the study, the perfect reunion duration is about three days.
– The results showed that the average respondent was willing to travel nearly 80 miles, but about one-third would venture more than 100 miles.
– 70% of travelers said they would be making the commute to their reunion by car, whether that be rental (30%) or their own (40%).
– 36% were opting for a hotel for their stay.
By asking what reunions meant and looked like to their respondents, the study also found that Americans had expanded their invite lists to now include friends (42%), significant others (39%), neighbors (34%) and pets (36%). And a majority of those attending reunions were looking forward to a mixture of celebrating old traditions and creating new ones.
The research delivered interesting insights into Americans’ summer plans following an extended period of travel restrictions. The findings formed the basis of a data-led news story for Motel 6, generating headlines and media coverage across national and regional news sites and consumer titles.
